Packing Well

Do you find yourself packing too much and wearing half of what you take? Are you tired of waiting for baggage? Are you beginning to travel alone and hate to ask others to help you with your heavy bags? You can pack lighter and still have the right clothing for every occasion.
Below are packing lists for men and women for a trip of between 5 days and 2 weeks. Think about your travel plans carefully and use these lists as a start. You may find that you don't need a skirt or that you do need more than one really dressy outfit. But always plan to take mix and match pieces in two basic colors. Pack accessories like scarves or jewelry that will change the look of an outfit quickly and take up very little room. You can pack even lighter if you are willing to do more laundry. Take care of your feet, be sure you protect your skin from the elements and after that, don't worry. Let the trip happen, be flexible and be confident—then you'll always look your best.


Women's Travel Packing List
(this list will create 20 different looks)
Clothing
• 1 jacket (casual blazer type)
• 1 skirt that coordinates with the jacket
• 1 pair slacks that coordinate with the jacket
• 1 additional bottom piece, either slacks or skirt 1 long-sleeved shirt
• 2 additional shirts or blouses
• 1 outfit suitable for dressy occasions—this can be a dressy blouse that goes with the slacks and jacket already listed or a more formal dress or 2-piece outfit • 1 cardigan sweater
• 1 or 2 T-shirts (if you're going someplace cold, substitute a long-sleeved turtleneck for one of the T-shirts. The other T-shirt should be large enough to serve as a swimsuit cover-up or nightgown)
• 2 - 8 pairs underwear
• 3 - 4 bras
• 1 set sleepwear
• 1 swimsuit (optional)
• 1 set thermal silk or polyester long underwear (can be worn as sleepwear or as underwear if you find yourself in a sudden climate change)
• 1 half-slip if needed for dressy outfit or skirts—make sure it will work under everything else you're bringing
• 1 pair sandals or thongs
• gloves
• 1 pair walking shorts (if appropriate for your destination and the climate)
• exercise clothing

Outer Layer
• 1 raincoat, windbreaker or poncho—packable if the weather will be variable

Extremities
• 1 pair tights
• 4 - 5 pairs of socks
• 1 pair of athletic shoes (optional)
• 1-2 pairs walking shoes
• 1 pair dressy shoes (if one of the pairs of walking shoes is not dressy enough)
• Sun and rain hat

Accessories • 2 - 4 scarves
• 1 or 2 belts
• Simple jewelry:1 - 3 pairs earrings, necklace to match if you like, but nothing valuable
• 1 umbrella


Men's Packing List

Clothing
• 1 suit or jacket with coordinating slacks
• 2 additional pairs of slacks that coordinate with the jacket
• 1 - 3 short-sleeved shirts
• 1 - 3 long sleeved shirts (depending on the weather you're expecting, you may take 4 and 1 or 1 and 4 of short and long sleeved items)
• 1 dark thin-knit, medium weight sweater (for over shirts and under jackets)
• 1 pair pajamas or sleepshirt
• 2 - 8 pairs underwear
• 2 - 4 undershirts
• 1 pair swim trunks
• 1 or 2 T-shirts (for over swim wear or as nightshirt)

Optional
• 1 set of thermal silk or polyester-knit long underwear (for cold weather or as sleep wear in an emergency)
• gloves
• 1 pair walking shorts (if appropriate to your destination and the weather)
• exercise clothing

Outer Layer
• 1 raincoat or windbreaker (packable is the weather is variable, warmer as necessary)


Extremities
• 4 to 5 pairs socks
• 1 or 2 pairs walking shoes (1 pair slightly dressier)
• 1 pair of athletic shoes
• sun and rain hat

Accessories
• 2 neck ties
• 1 belt
• 1 umbrella
