Autumn is the perfect time to travel. The weather is excellent almost everywhere, the crowds have shrunk and the prices have gone down. All this makes it the perfect time to travel. So here are a couple of ideas for quick getaways that will boost your October.
Red-tiled roofs and white stucco buildings give credence to Santa Barbara's claim of being the American Riviera. The city also has a car-free campaign, electric shuttle buses, and urban bike trails. Santa Barbara is heaven for oenophiles and beach-lovers and also has a surprising craft-beer scene. Pet and family friendly, the city offers lots to see and do.
Check out the waterfront district and the Santa Barbara Surfing Museum. Your visit in October offers epicure.sb - a month long celebration of local wine and food.
Get there via Alaska, American and United airlines - or via Southwest Airlines, then a drive up the coast for 95 miles. For beautiful ocean views, stay at the Harbor View Inn or Wayfarer.
For something entirely different, check out southwest Virginia's charming small towns and music scene. Start in Floyd where you can enjoy jam sessions of bluegrass and gospel at the Friday Night Jamboree at Floyd Country Store. Then head to Marion, where you will find the historic Lincoln Theatre. One of only three existing art deco Mayan Revival Theatres in America, it was originally built for vaudeville performances.
But the main event is the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, set for September 16-18. Celebrating the birth of country music, the festival features almost 100 music acts.
Get there by flying into Charlotte and driving 140 miles, or into Knoxville and driving 100 miles. Stay in Abingdon at the Martha Washington Inn. In Marion, try the General Francis Marion Hotel with its fun 1920s vibe. You can rent bikes and helmets for a 3 hour ride down White Mountain - a great way to see the Virginia Creeper Trail, named for a steam engine that served the area.
